The Elizabeth Duncan-Koontz Instructional Guild sponsors a weekly tutorial program for students in elementary, middle and senior high school. Assistance is also available for some college students. Staffed by a group of professionals and para-professionals, these volunteers offer their skills and service in an effort to bolster student academic success and achievement. Tutors are available Monday through Thursday.
The Oak Grove Day Care Center was established to provide an early childhood development and kindergarten experience for children of the community and church members. It is an extension of the Oak Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church. The Kindergarten classes specialize in creating an atmosphere for learning and the development of reading, writing, and beginning mathematical competencies. In the continuous pursuit of academic excellence, a well-rounded cultural experience is provided. The curriculum is designed to promote the humanitarian, physical, social, cultural and spiritual development of each child.
The Scholarship Fund and its supporting sponsors provide financial assistance to worthy students, who are members of Oak Grove, on an annual basis. Some of those to be awarded include the Elizabeth Crews, Cornelia Davis, Rosa Evans, Luella John, Gloria Mells, and David E. Mitcham Scholarship.
The Oak Grove After School Tutorial Program operates September through May and provides tutorial services for children in Detroit area schools. Students who attend this program see a marked improvement in academic levels by the end of the school term. They receive assistance in all areas of academia including, math, reading, computer training and more. Students receive a nourishing snack before beginning their tutorial sessions. At the end of the school year the students celebrate with a closing ceremony.
